More than 550 theater buffs helped mark the opening of the Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s 2013-2014 season at its annual gala June 17. Greeted by actors dressed in elaborate costumes from the upcoming season — and surrounded by the theater’s sweeping skyline views — attendees enjoyed a three-course dinner, followed by a performance in the Courtyard Theater.
Orchestrated by creative producer Rick Boynton, artistic associate and casting director Bob Mason and director Rachel Rockwell, the program featured Broadway couple Jason Danieley and Marin Mazzie belting out tunes composed by the evening’s artistic honoree Stephen Sondheim. Former Mayor Richard M. Daley was also honored for his work in solidifying Navy Pier as the theater’s home while he was in office. More than $1 million was raised to benefit the theater’s partnership with Chicago Public Schools to improve literacy and culture.
The Sun-Times was the media sponsor of this event. The Sun-Times Foundation and the Chicago Community Trust will match every dollar donated to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, up to a total of $25,000. Up to $1,000 can be matched per individual donation.
