How many times have you found yourself in a situation where you have decided to avoid accomplishing a task because any part of the process made you nervous or uncomfortable? What would you say if I told you to embrace that feeling because it’s a key ingredient to success?
Let me break this thought process down a bit. Think about a time in your career when things seemed to be moving along as they normally would. You were probably mildly happy with a sense of security due to the lack of change. Now, imagine that someone approaches you with a dream job, full of enticing and life-changing perks.
Immediately, you daydream about how your life could improve and decide this is the right move for you, so you ask for the details in order to obtain this dream job. I challenge you to think about what could make you so uncomfortable or anxiety-ridden that it makes you turn down this life optimizing opportunity.
Would you have to speak in front of large crowds? Re-locate to a new city? Bare a portion of your personal life? Or maybe you’re asked to teach something to others that you feel you aren’t qualified to do.
Unfortunately, our brains seem to be hard-wired for self-deprecation, so many of us just succumb to the feelings of self-doubt (myself included). Luckily, some of my favorite entrepreneurs and self-help gurus step in to remind me of one of my favorite phrases:
Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
Think about that phrase for a minute. Really think about it and understand what it means to you. It’s those people that acknowledge these feelings as positive energy and accept it into their lives that tend to be the most successful in life, simply because they refuse to allow the uncomfortable feelings of self-doubt to stop them from accomplishing their dreams and goals.
What’s something you need to do today that makes you uneasy? What do you think will happen when you decide to embrace that feeling and work through it?
