If you haven’t heard this song on the radio, then you must be living on Mars. It’s a catchy little tune with a story that allows us to easily access our imagination and cast our exes as the main character in the song. I love the fact that it shows both points of view. The boy sings first about the girl and then the girl sings about the boy, both of them blaming each other for demise of the relationship.
As the song played over and over on the radio, in shopping malls, clubs, airports, etc., I noticed myself belting out the words in my head – and I was frustrated that I couldn’t cast an ex in the main role of the boy. I wanted to act it out so badly in my head and time and again, the boy was a blank face.
I decided to Tweet something about this, because I found it interesting that this role of having an ex I’m upset with no longer remained in my subconscious. I’ve freed all of them from my ethereal cord of mental gloom and doom. I was excited about this. To me this was part of my spiritual evolution.
I Tweeted something like: “You know you are over your exes when you sing Somebody That I Used To Know and no one pops into your head.”
Some of the responses I received back on Twitter actually surprised me. I received the typical LOLs or ha ha’s, but I also received some that said, “That was mean,” or “That’s because you’re a bitch.”
Usually I let negative comments roll off my back, but I wanted to dive in to the psyche of why some got angry. I realized that everyone’s interpretation of things they read or hear comes from their own experiences. I think the people who were upset by it were in relationships where they didn’t want to be forgotten by their exes, even negatively.
There is nothing more painful than one-way love. I didn’t say anything back of course. I just hoped that most people understood I meant no harm. I actually meant I have love for all of my exes, so I don’t need to beat them up mentally in songs (anymore).
When you start to look at your exes as teachers, it becomes so apparent that they are you and you are them. There is no need to hate. So, if you really don’t want to let go of an ex, I suggest singing this infamous song again but casting yourself in both parts.
Now, if you are open-minded and can shift, you will then be able to make this song your own reality. You will be singing to the old you – and that old you will just turn into Somebody That You Used To Know.
