Team text message or team phone call: Which are you on?

Posted by Jenny McCarthy on 23 Nov 2012

I don’t know about you, but I’m not much of a talker. That shouldn’t surprise anyone (seeing that I love writing), but I thought everyone would fall into the same category as me, which is Team Text Message. Guess not. Being 40 in the dating world (gross), I’ve noticed that older men prefer a phone call to get to know one another (even more gross). I can understand their theory but I don’t agree with it. One might think you can have a better back and forth conversation, which would ultimately lead to getting to know each other better, but I would have to be the contrarian on this one. Yes, a phone call can get much more dialogue in, but I notice with text messaging you will get quality of words over quantity of words. I don’t mind Skype, because I get visual stimulation, but for some reason phone calls drive me bonkers. Being that I’m incredibly ADD, anytime I have to do a little small talk it feels like someone is pulling my nails off with pliers. I don’t know why, but it just does. Being that I’m incredibly ADD, anytime I have to do a little small talk it feels like someone is pulling my nails off with pliers. I don’t know why, but it just does. My friends and family all know that if they call me there has to be a point to the conversation. I can’t just “catch up” or talk for the purpose of talking. I also feel like I can really feel a guy out better through his texts. Since guys sometimes have a hard time in general formulating their emotions into words, they have no choice now but to do so in the text messaging world. They can’t hide behind a stoic face while sipping wine, they have to actually stimulate my mind with their words on my phone to pique my interest.

OK, hold on. I just looked up some stuff online, and it said that Team Text Messagers feel more comfortable revealing their real self through text due to the fact that most of the time they are socially anxious and experience difficulties with face-to-face communication. That is totally me. Holy cow. Maybe because I’m in the public eye, it’s harder for people to be themselves with me when we’re face-to-face, but with text messages I get their authentic selves.

Nonetheless, I’m pro-Team Text Messaging — even when I have to talk to my mom.

What about you? Which team are you on and why?
